Irrigation Engineer

Job Description:
Under the technical supervision of FAO/AGLW, in close collaboration with the National Programme Coordinator (NPC), a number of missions by the TCDC consultant will be needed to prepare and provide support to the water control and low-cost irrigation component. The Irrigation Engineer's duties would include:
- undertake field visits to review the implementation and demonstration of the various micro-irrigation systems;
- prepare a detailed programme of work related to demonstrations of micro-irrigation systems;
- start the implementation of the programme by carrying out relevant surveys: topography, soils, and the groundwater at the proposed sites;
- establish a detailed technical design of the irrigated schemes planned for implementation;
- assist in the procurement of equipment and necessary inputs and supplies, particularly in preparing of specifications and analyzing offers for the supply and construction of low-cost drip and sprinkler systems, water tanks, and petrol and treadle pumps;
- evaluate the use and operation of the various pump types on shallow wells, the methods of well construction, and prepare recommendations for improved efficient operation and maintenance of the pump sets and well development;
- assist field staff in the design and planning of simple low-cost drip and sprinkler irrigation systems;
- prepare relevant guidelines for field staff, training materials and instruction leaflet, and assist in the development and implementation of a training programme for field staff;
- carry out the first technical staff training in micro-irrigation technologies and on-farm water management;
- prepare a mission report.
Qualifications:
A degree in irrigation engineering, at least as MSc, and 10 years field experience. He/she will be an experienced and qualified water management specialist with adequate experience in irrigation technology, on-farm management, training and institutional arrangements for irrigated agriculture.
