Geo-spatial Technology Training for Somaliland MoERD

SWALIM has concluded a 10 day Geo-Spatial training course for the Somaliland Ministry of Environment and Rural Development, held in May 2015. The course targeted selected ministry technical staff and covered Global Positioning System (GPS), Google Earth, Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing among other related topics. It was a largely hands-on  course with numerous practical sessions and exercises where the trainees used Somaliland datasets to practice the concepts learnt. To extend the learning beyond the classroom, the trainees were provided with a large set of learning materials including Power Point presentations, step by step manuals, sample datasets and reference materials.

It is expected that the staff that attended this training will share the skills gained with the rest of the ministry technical staff by applying the skills gained in their day to day work and therefore facilitate wider use of Geospatial technology within the ministry. Use of Geospatial technology will help the ministry better fulfill its mandates. Some of the expected areas of application include environmental and land resources surveys and monitoring, land resource management and policy development among others.
